Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. ![]() Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. ![]() The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Crews responded within four minutes to the scene. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. The Spanish dollar, also known as the piece of eight ( Spanish: Real de a ocho, Dólar, Peso duro, Peso fuerte or Peso ), is a silver coin of approximately 38 mm (1.5 in) diameter worth eight Spanish reales. The cabin boy Jim, who narrates the tale, reflects many years later on his adventure. The Piece of Eight was made famous in pirate folklore when Robert Louis Stevenson published his famous novel, Treasure Island, featuring the villainous pirate Long John Silver and his sidekick parrot, which he named Captain Flint after his former pirate captain. In fact, it was expected that, to make change, they literally cut the coins into 8 pieces or “bits.” Hence, the British called the Spanish dollar a “Piece of Eight,” and when they said something cost “two bits,” they meant it cost a quarter of a dollar. Cutting money was not illegal, like it is now. Spanish coins were preferred over other currency because they had a milled, or patterned, edge, which prevented dishonest traders from shaving slivers off the coins without being detected. The most common coin used during this time was the silver Spanish dollar, which was worth 8 “reales,” a unit of currency in Spain.īack then, coins were valued by their actual weight in silver or gold, not just on what they looked like. Instead, they resorted to using whatever coinage they could get their hands on. Colonists in British North America were not allowed to mint money of their own, even though they often ran out of English coins to use in day-to-day business. ![]() We're once again reminded of just how powerful this movie is and how it stands to be even more of a conversation starter once it lands on Hulu for mass consumption. You may be looking for computer reading glasses that do nothing more than block out harmful blue light. There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to eye protection, so you should carefully consider your situation and your needs. What type of computer reading glasses are right for you? That depends on your vision, daily screen time, and personal preferences. In addition, your eyes will remain more visible to others with anti-glare coatings. Glasses with anti-glare (or anti-reflective) coatings can prevent this, making it easier for you to view screens clearly. Glare is the reflection on the inside or outside of glasses lens that can disrupt your vision. Many computer reading glasses offer UV protection, which won’t protect you from your computer screen but can protect you from other UV light sources like sunlight. UV light is not emitted from LCD screens found in computers or smart phone screens, so there is no need to worry about UV exposure from your screen. Many computer reading glasses are designed to filter out harmful blue light from screens and fluorescent lights. While sunlight contains more blue light than any other light source, the amount of time we spend looking at phone and computer screens and the proximity of the light source add up to a potentially harmful amount of blue light. It's the only part of the film that has any actual emotional resonance. And this is actually the best part of the entire film, once you get to see who this man is and his backstory. There's also this subplot with this old man that the kids around town believe to be a serial killer. You also have Catherine O'Hara, who plays the mom, doing whatever it is she can do to get back to Chicago to Kevin. But that's another thing that you can't build an entire movie out of. ![]() Maybe Kevin realizing that he loves and misses his family in spite of how they treat him. So I get that, but there's no actual narrative to speak of here. You can't build an entire movie out of a kid foiling the thieves' plans with his traps, eventually the jokes would be repeated and the law of diminishing returns would end up applying here. And, realistically speaking, I get why they left it all for the third act. So, for the most part, I felt that the movie was really killing time before they got to that point. The thieves do follow Kevin around and they scout out his house, but the actual traps that Kevin sets and their effects on the thieves is actually very minimal. Yet, it turns out that those segments of the film only, really, comprise like 15% of the entire movie. I haven't seen this movie in a long-ass time, seriously, and I remembered it being much more geared towards Kevin fucking over the thieves with various traps. Oh and he also has to deal with these thieves that want to go in his house to steal his family's shit since, naturally, they feel that they can handle him. He does everything he couldn't do when he didn't have a family, rinse and repeat. Kevin wakes up, finds out that his family is gone. I think the main problem with the film is that it's fairly repetitive. Those two have nothing in comparison with the minor exception that Hughes wrote both of them. Or at least it's a middle-of-the-road for him, considering that this is the same guy that wrote The Breakfast Club. John Hughes wrote some truly great movies in the 80s, but this is obviously not one of his best. That's not to say that I can't enjoy a film like this, as in something lighter in tone, I obviously have, but I don't think this movie has enough material to justify its own existence. It was never made to please critics or people like me, who appreciate well-written movies with strong character development. Though, if we're being honest, this movie was never meant to be more than a crowd-pleaser. But I digress, maybe this movie wasn't even good in the 90s, but I don't think time has been super kind to this. Actually now that I think about it, it was Santa Claus since, later in the film after his family has left for Paris, he goes to one of Santa's 'representative' for him to tell Santa that all he wants for Christmas is his family back. ![]() I don't know who Kevin was asking for when he asked for this, but let's say it was Santa Claus. Like I said, there's certain some elements associated with the 'genre', like when Kevin, after an incident where he gets grounded after a fight with his brother and ruins the family dinner, wishes for his family to disappear. And, really, this movie is one of those holiday movies that takes place during the holidays, but isn't really completely centered on the holiday itself. They just happen to take place during the Christmas season and they certainly have some themes associated with the season, but they're not completely centered around Christmas with a, sort-of, tunnel vision where nothing else can come in. There's films like Bad Santa and Uncle Nick that try to subvert this genre with darker stories, but, even then, the end goal of the film isn't really about Christmas. You can only go a couple of ways with these films and, usually, filmmakers go for the sweet, sappy and corny. Christmas is, really, such a limiting concept. And I really think that that's the problem with a lot of these films. Some of the best holiday/Christmas movies are those movies that, really, have very little to do with Christmas. ![]() But before they were able to act, their father Hypnos had to do the work, putting people to sleep. The myth says that Oneiroi lived at the shores of the Ocean in the West, in the cave close to Hades. Oneiroi, The Dream-Bearing Sons Of Hypnos The most significant appearance that Hypnos makes in Greek myth is in connection with the Trojan war in The Iliad by Homer. Their sons – Oneiroi (meaning “dreams” in Greek) were: Morpheus, Ikelos, Phobetor, and Phantasos. Hypnos, the Greek god of and personification of sleep, was the son of Nyx and Erebus who lived in the underworld with his brother Thanatos. There were rumors (well, they exist even in mythology!) that Hypnos and Pasithea had even a thousand children, but the most common belief is that they had four sons. Their marriage was a direct result of Hypnos’s blackmail to Hera – in order to do her a very tricky favor regarding the Trojan War, Hypnos asked for Pasithea and Hera had no choice so she offered her to Hypnos. Hypnos was married to the youngest of the Graces – Pasithea (or Pasithee), a deity of hallucination or relaxation, depending on the interpretation. One version suggests that Hypnos lived in the cave under one Greek island, Lemnos, and that through his cave the river of forgetfulness, Lethe, used to flow. Hypnos lived in the dark cave, in the Hades (Underworld), whose entrance was full of poppies and other hypnotic plants. ![]() In Hesiod’s version though, Hypnos had no father. However, Griffin suggests that this division of dream forms between Morpheus and his brothers, possibly including their names, may have been of Hellenistic origin. Tripp calls these three figures "literary, not mythical concepts". The three brothers' names are found nowhere earlier than Ovid, and are perhaps Ovidian inventions. One called Icelos ('Like'), by the gods, but Phobetor ('Frightener') by men, "takes the form of beast or bird or the long serpent", and Phantasos ('Fantasy'), who "puts on deceptive shapes of earth, rocks, water, trees, all lifeless things". Ovid gives names to two more of these sons of Sleep. Ovid called Morpheus and his brothers, the other sons of Somnus, the Somnia ("dream shapes"), saying that they appear in dreams "mimicking many forms". According to Ovid "no other is more skilled than he in representing the gait, the features, and the speech of men the clothing also and the accustomed words of each he represents." Like other gods associated with sleep, Ovid presents Morpheus as winged. ![]() His name derives from the Greek word for form (μορφή), and his function was apparently to appear in dreams in human guise. Hypnus was depicted as a young man with wings on his shoulders or brow. His godly symbol is a branch of a poplar tree dipped into the River Lethe, the river of forgetfulness located in the Underworld. Ovid makes Morpheus one of the thousand sons of Somnus (Sleep). Hypnos (), also known as Hypnus (hippopotamuses) is the god of sleep daddy, a son of Erebos and Nyx, and twin of Thanatos. In Ovid's account Juno (via the messenger goddess Iris) send Morpheus to appear to Alcyone in a dream, as her husband Ceyx, to tell her of his death. The only mention of Morpheus occurs in Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Ovid tells of the story of Ceyx and his wife Alcyone who were transformed into birds. ![]() From the Middle Ages, the name began to stand more generally for the god of dreams, or of sleep.
