Since hail can cause the rainfall estimates to be higher than what is actually occurring, steps are taken to prevent these high dBZ values from being converted to rainfall. Hail is a good reflector of energy and will return very high dBZ values. These values are estimates of the rainfall per hour, updated each volume scan, with rainfall accumulated over time. Depending on the type of weather occurring and the area of the U.S., forecasters use a set of rainrates which are associated to the dBZ values. The higher the dBZ, the stronger the rainrate. Typically, light rain is occurring when the dBZ value reaches 20. The scale of dBZ values is also related to the intensity of rainfall. The value of the dBZ depends upon the mode the radar is in at the time the image was created. Notice the color on each scale remains the same in both operational modes, only the values change. The other scale (near left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in precipitation mode (dBZ values from 5 to 75). One scale (far left) represents dBZ values when the radar is in clear air mode (dBZ values from -28 to +28). Crews responded within four minutes to the scene. Tuesday for a report of a possible home explosion. Madison Fire Department Chief Chris Carbon said the fire department was called just before 6 p.m. Each reflectivity image you see includes one of two color scales. ( WMTV /Gray News) - An apparent condo complex explosion led to four people being hospitalized, authorities said Tuesday. The dBZ values increase as the strength of the signal returned to the radar increases. So, a more convenient number for calculations and comparison, a decibel (or logarithmic) scale (dBZ), is used. Reflectivity (designated by the letter Z) covers a wide range of signals (from very weak to very strong). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver. The severe weather threat looks low at this time, but a tornado risk could develop with a shift in the expected track, so stay tuned for further forecast updates. The colors are the different echo intensities (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z) during each elevation scan. The main impacts locally appear to be flash flooding from three, to perhaps as much as six inches of rain and gusty winds of 30+ mph (higher in the mountains). Fog, if any, should clear throughout the morning as sunshine breaks through the clouds. Areas of fog could develop by early Tuesday morning, which could impact some on their morning commute to work. Still, though, showers and thunderstorms will likely linger into Sunday too with highs both days of the weekend in the lower 70s. (WLBT) - Expect low temperatures only in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees. The remnants of Ian are forecast to move up into the Carolinas late Friday night and Saturday, and that appears to be the timeframe when the heaviest rain can be expected. With highs in the 60s, Friday is shaping up to be not only wet but breezy and very cool. #NCwx #SCwx #CLTwx /8NiGyL4p7H- Al Conklin WBTV September 27, 2022Īt this point, it looks as if the storm will lift north into Georgia on Friday, and so rain will eventually overspread our area. 10 Day Weather - Charlotte, NC As of 10:17 am EDT Today 84/ 65 45 Mon 08 Day 84 45 WSW 8 mph Showers this morning then scattered thunderstorms developing during the afternoon hours.
